02/03/2020: What a difference a door makes!

The back door on this local office in Shirenewton had been neglected for some time and was in a pretty poor state, being eaten by various fungi and not holding up well under the strain.

With a new tenant in the office, which had been empty for a while, the door chose the middle of all the tropical storms we have been having to finally give up the ghost and let the elements in.

Changing a door isn't the biggest or most pressing job in the world, but it was important to the tenant to keep the elements out of his workplace, so we quickly got him a new uPVC door and surround, taking the opportutnity to widen the entrance a bit for better access and fitted it in a day. Being uPVC, it won't be as susceptible to the elements now, and the light oak colour is a lovely match for all the rest of the doors on the farm estate.

So, if your home has been suffering from the recent inclement weather, even if it is only a door, or a window, give us a call or drop a line to get it attended to efficiently before the weather can do any more harm.

14/01/2020: Blow, blow thou winter wind! Crack thy cheeks and blow.

If your doors and windows are even ever so slightly imperfect, nothing is going to make that obvious more than the weather at this time of year. Every tiny nook, cranny or crevice will be exploited by the wind and rain with the result of making your nice cosy home less so. With draughts slipping in to bring the chill and additional moisture, January, February and March are the months when all those factors really conspire to bring comfort levels down and push heating bills up. To restore draught free comfort to your home can well cost less than you may think. Being a local business, without costly national sales teams to support, when you buy from Wye Valley Renovation & Refurbishment, you pay only for your windows and the labour to fit them, not flashy cars and television advertising.

Let us give you a pleasant surprise; give us a call for a quote or click in the header of any page to send us an email and you could very soon be thumbing your nose at the worst that Winter can do. Now, where did I put that copy of &quout; The Tempest"

15/12/2019: From a broken window to a complete renovation. Every home has a list of jobs…

With Christmas and the new year coming along, it is often a time to look around at the family home and start listing the jobs that need doing in order to keep everyone comfortable, safe and happy. With the putting up and taking down of Christmas decorations, this list can be brought into sharp focus.

No matter how long or daunting the list may appear on the surface, with the right people on the job, just about any project can be completed quickly and efficiently, leaving you to look forward to nothing but relaxation when the festive season comes around again.

Take this house in Catbrook for example. To get the best use of space, the rooms needed to be remodeled, which involved the installation of new partition walls. Also, the plaster on the existing walls was in fairly poor condition, so this had to be replaced. Some of the floor boards were none too clever either, so had to be renewed. In keeping with the age and character of the building, appropriate materials and traditional methods were used throughout to give the best of all worlds, more useable space, better facilities and modern comforts all within a home that still looks traditional.

Whether your list has a number of small repairs or alterations on it, or a complete ground-up refurbishment like this one, give us a call or click in the header of any page to send us an email for a prompt response and competitive quotation.

16/11/2019: Landslips can be a real problem at this time of year

With weather and related damage being so much in the headlines recently, it was no surprise to get called out to restore a private road and banks to good order following a landslip.

This road represents a transport lifeline for two farms in Cwmyoy, near Abergvenny and had been partly washed away, partly covered in debris to the point where it had become impassable.

The solution involved first of all installing more efficient drainage for the road and surrounding banks, as well as clearing the material that had made its way down the hill, over the road and beyond.

The banks themselves were so steep that even staying on your feet was a challenge at times during the works. Driving a digger wasn't easy either, as you will see in our video gallery page. Despite this, our groundworks team made fairly short work of clearing debris and restoring the continuous track.

Once the road had been made good again, to prevent future slips, strategically placed gabion cages of rocks are now there to shore up and stabilise the bank. With current weather conditions, it is not unlikely that similar jobs will become necessary, so if you have a road, path or driveway that has been de-stabilised with all this rain, get in touch for a quick response and be sure of efficient and effective repairs.

September's here and the schools have gone back. From here it is headlong into... that's right, winter (If you thought it was going to be Christmas, you may breathe a huge sigh of relief now).

04/07/2019: The great outdoors is calling and the sun is shining.

As summer is finally here, it is time to enjoy the outside of your home as much as the inside. Areas such as patios, paths and driveways can make all the difference to the joy gained from sitting outside on a sunny day. Especially when they have just had some care and attention.

This was just such a project. The lovely old character home benefitted from a new block paved driveway, some curving paths through the large garden and a bit of landscaping in keeping with the age and charm of the house.

The pictures are all from work in progress stages here, so look back later on to see the images of the finished project when we post them. Even better, give us a call to talk over your own outdoor areas, or click in the header of any page to send us an email.

11/05/2019: Make the most of your outdoor space this summer.

Summer is just around the corner, and that is the time when most of us want to make the best use of our outdoor space. With a little shelter, some friends and a barbecue, the garden is definitely the place to be on the long evenings ahead.

This customer wanted something a little out of the ordinary to make their patio space perfect, so we came up with this western red cedar outbuilding with two open sides, some built in seating and a turf living roof to finish it off.

This preserves the feeling of being outdoors while providing a trap for the last of the warmth for the day. If you would like to get the best use from your garden or patio area, just give us a call and we will measure you up for a bespoke building to your own specification. Don't even worry if you haven't got a patio either, our expert team can lay you one in your choice of natural stone or other materials in time for the good weather.

04/04/2019: Looking back at a barn conversion in Llanishen

With the onset of summer and the longer period of dry weather with good natural light, now is a good time to start on the larger projects.

The photographs show the sequence of events that turned this semi-derelict barn in Llanishen into a beautifully light and open family home.

There was a lot of structural making good to be done before the conversion work could start in earnest. By having the longer days and the glorious summer weather (honestly!) on our side, the work was completed without delays, meaning that the family got their new dream home on time, just as they envisaged it and within budget.

Now may be the best time to start turning your property dreams into reality, so give us a call on the number shown or click in the header of any page to send us an email.

09/03/2019: Spring is in the air!

After a winter of discontent, it is soon going to be a great time to take a look at the outside of your home. How's the paintwork? The render? Window frames? Weather takes its toll on all buildings, just part of the price of living in God's Country we reckon.

However, we also believe in making hay while the sun shines, so this may be an opportunity to give the outside of your property a facelift to keep it looking beautiful. Also, this will enhance the protection against the ravages of next winter. They come round like clockwork it seems.

Whether it is a full hack off and re-render job like the one in the photos, or just a quick making good of the outer shell and a lick of paint, you can be sure that it will pay dividends the next time the weather starts to look a little inclement.

It doesn't have to cost a fortune either, or cause major disruption. Our experienced team can usually complete the job in the shortest possible time, minimising the inconvenience and leaving your property spotless, so you don't even have to clean up. Give us a call or click in the header of any page to get a quick, no-obligation quote for helping to keep your home looking good, whatever the weather.

04/01/2019: Winter is upon us like a pack of wolves

With the worst of winter still to come, there is still much that can be done in many homes to keep the warmth in and the excessive heating bills out. For example, the customer with this loft conversion called us in to give them more effective insulation.

Modern insulating materials are so good that enough could be applied to the ceilings without bringing the plaster board down too far and obscuring the featured beams.

The work can be completed quickly in such areas and can make a significant difference to the energy consumption of a home.

For ideas on how your home may benefit from a quick insulation boost, give us a call on the number above or click in the header of any page.
